The Indian Calendar

The word Calendar has its origin from the Roman word Calends or Kalends meaning a method of distributing time into certain periods adopted for the purpose of civil life.

Thus a calendar may be defined as a system of reckoning time over extended intervals by combining various convenient periods of time.

A Panchanga (Sanskrit: पञ्चाङ्गम्) is a Hindu Calendar and Almanac, which follows traditional units of Hindu timekeeping, and presents important dates and their calculations in a tabulated form.

The Indian Panchanga apart from giving statistical values also gives astrological information like auspicious moments, dates for religious festivals, planets, stars etc and aspects of our subtle environment which are unseen but strongly felt.

The Panchanga is made up of – Pancha (Five) Angas (Parts), as the name denotes, they are – Vaara (Weekday), Tithi (A Tithi is an exact lunar day, which is approximately one-thirtieth of the time it takes the moon to orbit the earth. A Tithi may vary in length from day to day), Karana (A Karana is half of a Tithi or lunar day), Nakshatra (Nakshatra means star cluster. In Hindu astrology the term nearly always refers to 27 specific star-clusters, or constellations, which lie along the ecliptic; the ecliptic is the apparent yearly path of the sun as seen from the earth.), Yoga (A yoga is a planetary configuration, union or relationship; it’s the exact measurement of the of the angular relationship between Sun and Moon, one Yoga equals 13 degrees 20’)

The Calendars and Panchangas, are the collection, compilation and flawless listing of Information about our Festivals and other events from our ancient times.
